1 Corinthians 12:27-31 (Links to teaching on Chapter 13) by Pastor Don Moore

1 Corinthians 12:27-31 by Pastor Don Moore

Bible study notes from 7/27/12

1 Corinthians 12:27-28 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.

In the modern church some things are wrong – most denominational churches don’t have people operating in these offices of the ministry or the gifts.

The Church is the whole Body of Christ – each individual church denomination does not need to have all these offices in practice, but as a collective there should be some members that function in these areas. And, for example,  if one church does not have someone with the gift of healings, maybe another church has someone operating in that gift and they can share with the whole Body of Christ. If one church needs a prophet, they should be able to call upon another church that has a prophet.

There are many who call themselves apostles, but they do not have all the characteristics of what an apostle is.  An apostle should operate in all the gifts and all the other offices.

A prophet may not be an apostle (or may be). A prophet may or may not be a teacher. A prophet speaks forth the Word of God.  He can foretell (what will come) or forthtell (speak the Word of God).

Notice – there is NO office of preacher.

A teacher is a Biblical teacher who should be able to operate and demonstrate what he/she teaches. In the church it is easy to get people to volunteer to teach. But not all who say they are teachers can fully teach because they can’t walk in what they are teaching. The purpose is to effectively teach so people understand clearly what is taught. The office of the teacher comes with a death sentence. If you teach in error, purposely or through ignorance, God holds you accountable.

We have to yield ourselves to the potter’s wheel. God pulls out the flaws and errors, and helps us get the ego out of the way.

Be honest when you teach. Know your personal position, or what thus says the Lord. If you are teaching in an area you haven’t mastered be honest and say, I haven’t attained it. I don’t understand it, but this is what thus says the Lord.

We are responsible for what we know and also for what we sit under. In our church if someone teachings something that is not Biblical we have the right to ask the teacher to show us where it is shown in the Word of God. We are not to accept false doctrine taught from the pulpit. God will expose where you are compromised.

Miracles are interventions into the natural by the supernatural hand of God. Many churches do not believe in miracles.  Those that don’t believe won’t see miracles in their church (they will have what they say). And if a miracle came into their church, they wouldn’t recognize it.

Gifts of healings – Jesus did not heal people the same way. For some blind people he spit on their eyes, sometimes he made a paste of clay, or just said go, you are healed.

The Holy Spirit releases a gift so that someone can be healed. In the modern church there are more examples of progressive healing because most in the churches can’t believe for instantaneous healing.

The devil is a liar and comes to kill, steal, and destroy. Whether it is progressive or instantaneous healing, continue to believe. Don’t give up.

Pastor Don had sugar diabetes and God provided a miracle. The Baptist church would have given him comfort with having to take medicine. A still small voice inside of Pastor Don told him that he should pray and fast ten days and God would heal Him. It was an inward audible voice.  God did heal Pastor Don.

There should be gifts of healing in the church.

If it is true what the churches teach about there being no spiritual gifts in operation since the apostles, that would be terrible, We’d be on the planet with darkness increasing and nothing to battle the darkness with. As the darkness rises, we need the gifts of the Spirit even more. We need the gift of prophecy to help us navigate the darkness.

The gifts of helps are supernatural helps, to be able to bless people without any sense of loss or fear of lack. Don’t let the right hand know what the left hand is doing.

Gifts of administration – is supernatural. Knowing what to do supernaturally, to raise money supernaturally.  This comes through God. Gifs of administration could be through a pastor, but it doesn’t have to be the pastor.

Pastors are to be the loving shepherds of the people. But people in congregations expect pastors to be everything to them. Not all pastors are able to do everything. When a pastor is expected to do so much it often leads to burnout.

Varieties of tongues – supernatural interpretation.

1 Corinthians 12:29-30 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

The answer to these questions is no – but that doesn’t mean that one person couldn’t operate in all of these giftings.

There are some people in the church you should never ask to pray for you. You want people who have been through some stuff to pray for you because they will know how to pray.

Sometimes, when we do not know how to pray, we pray in tongues. If we pray in tongues, we can also pray to have the Holy Spirit give us the interpretation.

In a church there should be some of all of these gifts, even if they come from visiting pastors.

When the prophet comes, they speak prophecies of the future. Some speak in tongues with interpretation. In a church with a clear prophetic voice there is not much need for tongues and interpretation. God speaks through the prophet and sometimes speaks mysteries in tongues. Whenever we receive a prophecy we need to discern if the prophecy is accurate, to test the prophecy.

God is God. If it is His house, He will speak when He wants.

How do we change if we realize things have been done the wrong way in our church? What do we do?  Recognize our gifts and ministries. Do what God wants us to do and no one has the right to shut the door on these gifts and ministries.

If we have these gifts know that they operate in love. The gifts can operate in the home, the parking lot, in the sanctuary. No one should shut it down.

If you have a prophecy for a person don’t say “Thus says the Lord,” for as we learn to operate in these gifts we may not hear perfectly at first.  Say to the person, “I believe the Lord is saying… , or I believe God wants me to …”

1 Corinthians 12:31 But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

Desire the best gifts. In Chapter 14, Paul will tell what the gifts are. As God to show you the more excellent way. The gifts of the Spirit operate in the body.

Hope this blesses you and that you desire spiritual gifts.

I missed the Friday Bible study that covers 1 Corinthians 13 – the love Chapter

Pastor Don has taught on this topic in the past, so here is the link to a teaching on 1 Corinthians 13  Link

God bless you,

About Heather Marsten

Welcome to Heather's Blog. I'm looking forward to meeting you and checking out your sites. I just moved about nine years of material over from another blog site, Xanga, who may close down mid-July. At first I was disappointed to make the move because I had a lifetime membership at Xanga and had to spend weeks transferring posts. But now I'm thrilled. Already I've met new bloggers and read many new websites. Blogging is a wonderful way to expand my horizons and garner new ideas. I'm a happily married mom of three young adults. My husband and I are proud to watch our children grow and venture out into the world. My daughter is still in college but my two sons have graduated. One has a job and the other just graduated and is in the process of finding a job in his field, physics. Anyone know of any jobs out there? I'm proud of our children and love watching them grow and mature. They've become fine, compassionate, and loving people. Empty nest? Nah, I'm too busy to let an empty nest bother me. Not enough hours in the day. My husband and I enjoy quiet time together and I have many interests to pursue - one of which is blogging :D I am a born-again believer and love God. As you read this blog, you will discover that Bible studies thrill me. There is so much wisdom contained between the covers of the Bible and I am fortunate to sit under the teachings of a remarkable pastor, Pastor Don Moore. Members of our church (Living Word Chapel in West Hurley, New York) are encouraged to teach and there are visiting pastors who stop by our church, I also study the Bible on my own and love sharing what I learn. One other passion is writing. My current work in process is a memoir. A scene from my memoir was published in a book called: Heavenly Company: Entertaining Angels Unaware - an anthology of angelic encounters compiled by Cecil Murphy. I'm hoping my memoir will encourage other survivors of abuse. I grew up in a home filled with abuse, including incest. For most of my life I was searching for something that would fill the void of not being loved by my parents. I tried many ways to find that love -- therapy, relationships, occult studies, and keeping my life so filled I had no way to think about my past. It was only when I discovered God that I was able to put the pieces of my life back together and walk forward in a joyous life. My nickname - wondering has changed from wondering where the heck God was in my life, to wondering what incredible adventure is going to happen next. I hope you enjoy my site. Please say hi, share some thoughts, and ask questions. I look forward to meeting you and checking out your sites. Have a blessed day. Heather
