1 Corinthians 12:1-11 by Pastor Don Moore

1 Corinthians 12:1-11 by Pastor Don Moore

Bible study notes from July, 2012

This is the most misunderstood passage In the Bible. We must ask personal questions as we read this passage. Can I find myself in these eleven verses? There is no date on these gifts; they are for all time.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that in the last days God is going to leave us unequipped when the devil is present. Nowhere does it say that spiritual gifts were only for the time of the apostles. God wants us equipped with every spiritual gift to fight the enemy.

1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

Paul was aware that, for the most part, the church is ignorant of Spiritual Gifts.

1 Corinthians 12:2 You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led.

There were a lot of idols in Paul’s time, and even today there are lots of idols. There’s even a TV show called American Idol.

1 Corinthians 12:3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

Pastor Don said, demon possessed people can confuse you. It is only through the Holy Spirit that a person can say, Jesus is Lord, the CEO of our life, the Headman is in charge. A demon possessed person could say that Jesus is Lord, but not Jesus is MY Lord. Even the demons who Jesus cast out recognized that Jesus was Lord. If a demon possessed person tries to quote Scripture to make a verbal commitment to Jesus, they get choked up in the throat and they change Scriptures to speak an untruth. You can’t come to Jesus by internal connections.  It is a message of the Holy Spirit that draws a person. If someone curses Jesus, it is not by the Holy Spirit and Jesus is not their personal Lord.

If someone is operating spiritual gifts and they pay homage to anyone other than Jesus, it is counterfeit. The devil can place his hand of sickness on your life and remove it when it suits him to make you think you are healed, but he can then place his hand of sickness back on you any time he chooses.

To know if the operation of spiritual gifts is from God or the devil figure out who gets the glory. And ask yourself does the use of these gifts create a positive change in the person? Is there a true conversion experience in the person?

After Peter denied the Lord and Jesus restored him, you don’t find Peter fornicating, or committing other kinds of sin.

Half the Bible talks about fruit. The Word causes us to continue the fight or get victory over the fight. The Holy Spirit doesn’t let you rest in the role of a perpetual sinner.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

SAME GOD – SAME SPIRIT

1 Corinthians 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

The gifts and ministries are not for the person that has them but for everybody else. Their talent is not for themselves but a side benefit. To benefit and bless other people. We are given the gifts for the profit of all.

Self-analysis and get on your knees. God shows off and does what He wants to do through one person for the benefit of many.

1 Corinthians 12:8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,

What Spirit?  The Spirit of God operating in one person. I can use life experience and operate in the arena of wisdom because they show promise. The wisdom and knowledge mentioned in this passage is supernatural wisdom and knowledge.

The Word of Knowledge tells you something that you would not know in the natural. For example you are told in the Spirit to pray for Uncle Joe who lives cross country. Then later you find out that the time you were praying for Uncle Joe he had a health crisis. The Spirit of God speaks to your spirit and your spirit connects with Uncle Joe’s spirit. This is not information you would know in the natural.

The Word of Wisdom tells us what to do with the Word of Knowledge.  This is a gift God has given for the profit of all. It can be given at a specific time for a specific purpose. Because you function in that gift for one time does not mean that you will always function with that spiritual gift.

Dealing with the Spirit is a matter of relationship over time so we can learn His voice.

We all think we are good people. We all believe an idea we have is from God. Our logic is that we are good so whatever I think is what God thinks.  Sadly that is not always true. So when we get what we think is a Word of Knowledge or a Word of Wisdom, we need to discern the source. Make sure these words agree with the Bible. The Spirit and the Word must agree.

1 Corinthians 12:9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,

This is not simple, regular faith; it is a supernatural faith to believe something that one would not normally believe in the natural.

A Biblical example is when Jesus asked the disciples, who do men say that I am and Peter responds with you are the Christ, the Son of God. God gave Peter that revelation and he had supernatural faith to believe it.

Our heritage and culture makes it hard for us to believe some things. Pastor Don was once diagnosed with sugar diabetes. As a Baptist he was expected to believe that God would be with him THROUGH the disease until it finally killed him. That he would be a diabetic, and God would help him have the strength to bear the disease.

Instead, Pastor Don listened to the Spirit and he did what the Holy Spirit told him to do. (note, this is not something all should do in this circumstance – don’t do it unless clearly you hear from the Holy Spirit)  The Holy Spirit told him not to wear the diabetic bracelet, to fast and pray for ten days and God would heal his diabetes.  He did that, and when he next saw the doctor the diabetes was cured (the doctor was shocked at the ten day fast for that is not something one should do with diabetes).  Pastor Don then said that once healed, he also had to take care of the eating habits that brought him to this point of diabetes.

When special faith pops up, know you have to operate in that faith and obey God. Learn to listen to what the Spirit says.

With gifts of healings – the healing power can flow through you even if you do not have faith for their problem.  Katherine Kuhlman operated in the gifts of healing. This was not simple faith, but a supernatural gift of God to believe for healing beyond the normal realm.

Zacchaeus, when he was ministering in the temple, had a visit from the Angel Gabriel of how his wife was going to have a child – she was too old for childbirth, so he did not believe. Because of that, Gabriel prevented Zacchaeus from speaking until the child was born and named John.  That was a blessing because then Zacchaeus would not be able to speak against the miracle.

People who love the Lord have a simple faith that you can accomplish what God wants you to do. Supernatural faith is instantaneous and bypasses your simple faith, faith for faith.  This supernatural faith is given to one in a situation where more than simple faith is needed.

1 Corinthians 12:10-11 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

These gifts of the Spirit operate by one and the same Spirit.

At this point Darrell Hayes took over the rest of the Bible study. I will post his part of the class in a separate post. He speaks about being partakers of the Holy Spirit.

I missed a week of Bible study, so am going to include the verse Pastor Don covered while I was out. During July and August I missed several weeks of Bible study due to taking kids to college and family vacations.

1 Corinthians 12: 10-27 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

Unity and Diversity in One Body

12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not one member but many.

15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. 19 And if they were all one member, where would the body be?

20 But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. 21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. 23 And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, 24 but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, 25 that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. 26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

Hoping your day is blessed,

Heather

About Heather Marsten

Welcome to Heather's Blog. I'm looking forward to meeting you and checking out your sites. I just moved about nine years of material over from another blog site, Xanga, who may close down mid-July. At first I was disappointed to make the move because I had a lifetime membership at Xanga and had to spend weeks transferring posts. But now I'm thrilled. Already I've met new bloggers and read many new websites. Blogging is a wonderful way to expand my horizons and garner new ideas. I'm a happily married mom of three young adults. My husband and I are proud to watch our children grow and venture out into the world. My daughter is still in college but my two sons have graduated. One has a job and the other just graduated and is in the process of finding a job in his field, physics. Anyone know of any jobs out there? I'm proud of our children and love watching them grow and mature. They've become fine, compassionate, and loving people. Empty nest? Nah, I'm too busy to let an empty nest bother me. Not enough hours in the day. My husband and I enjoy quiet time together and I have many interests to pursue - one of which is blogging :D I am a born-again believer and love God. As you read this blog, you will discover that Bible studies thrill me. There is so much wisdom contained between the covers of the Bible and I am fortunate to sit under the teachings of a remarkable pastor, Pastor Don Moore. Members of our church (Living Word Chapel in West Hurley, New York) are encouraged to teach and there are visiting pastors who stop by our church, I also study the Bible on my own and love sharing what I learn. One other passion is writing. My current work in process is a memoir. A scene from my memoir was published in a book called: Heavenly Company: Entertaining Angels Unaware - an anthology of angelic encounters compiled by Cecil Murphy. I'm hoping my memoir will encourage other survivors of abuse. I grew up in a home filled with abuse, including incest. For most of my life I was searching for something that would fill the void of not being loved by my parents. I tried many ways to find that love -- therapy, relationships, occult studies, and keeping my life so filled I had no way to think about my past. It was only when I discovered God that I was able to put the pieces of my life back together and walk forward in a joyous life. My nickname - wondering has changed from wondering where the heck God was in my life, to wondering what incredible adventure is going to happen next. I hope you enjoy my site. Please say hi, share some thoughts, and ask questions. I look forward to meeting you and checking out your sites. Have a blessed day. Heather
