Apostasy in the Church by Pastor Don Moore

Sunday Bible Study 7/25/10 (I combined my notes from the AM and PM service).

Pastor Don spoke of how people are trying to figure out who the enemy of the Church is, who is Mystery Babylon. Some contend it is Islam, others have different ideas. There will be a great falling away, an apostasy.

Why did Jesus ask, will I find faith on the earth? The problem is not outside the church, but internal. There is idolatry and false teachings within the Church.

Timothy, Titus, 1 & 2 Corinthians, and 1 & 2 Peter speak of this.

The following verses were written by Paul TO THE CHURCH.

2 Timothy 3:1-5  But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! There are false teachers within the church. Erosion is occurring in people of faith.

2 Timothy 4:2-5 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

2 timothy 3:6-7 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

The Bible has stood the test of time – 3,000 years. People have lied about the Bible, deception and many attempts to disprove the prophesies.  People have stated that there has been tampering with the Bible, and that translations have altered the meaning of the text. But when the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, this was disproved. They found copies of the Pentateuch and the Prophets, and there were few differences in wording, just small things like the placement of a punctuation mark.

There is a movement afoot to change everything, and the attack on the church is not coming from outside the church but from within. When Jesus said,
“When I come, will I find faith on the earth?”  He was speaking not only of unbelievers but of those in the Church. Everyone involved in the church is not involved the way the Apostle Paul was involved with the Church.

Locally there is a Bible club at Kingston High School because one of our members is a teacher and willing to be in the room when the kids meet. At Onteora there is no teacher willing to chaperone the meetings.

Culture is not big on Jesus. In these last days there is an active attack on the Church. We see it in school, politics, the new age, false religions, and people trying to tear down Christianity. The devil’s move is to try and change what Christians believe. There are attacks on the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, stating that it did not happen. 53% of Methodist pastors do not believe that Jesus died and rose from the dead. They do not want to crack down on sin, believing that people are basically good and that we should love everybody, not condemning certain behaviors, and throwing out anything that offends people. If we raised our children without correction we would have spoiled brats that would not be a good contribution to society. The current trend is that if you love me, you won’t correct me no matter what I am doing wrong. That is not a good definition of love.

One of the newest false teachings is very dangerous it is called CONCEPTUAL-TEXTUAL INTERPRETATION. This lie eats away at the truth of the Scriptures. It says that Bible interpretation is subject to the context from which you came, that there is no actual truth.  That you can cause the Scriptures to be anything you desire. With this kind of interpretation they can argue for or against anything they want and find a basis for doing what they want to do. It states that there is no actual truth.

If you accept conceptual-textual interpretation why serve God at all? What they want is a subjective interpretation of the Bible, but that is myopic and leads to confusion, for there is no absolute truth. In thousands of years no one has proved any part of the Bible wrong. New Agers want to change the definition of God, so that they can live without restraint.

There is a move to seek Global peace, not peace as God gives it, but peace that is sought by accepting and doing anything (even unbiblical) to keep peace in our own power.

The church needs to restore God, faith, obedience, and responsibility. Other religions and the false belief that all religions are compatible is eroding our faith. Not all religions are the same, even though they use some of the same terminology.  Allah is not God. If you change any part of the truth it is no longer truth. Many want to unseat Jesus, but without a King you cannot have a Kingdom. In some cults Jesus is not considered the Son of God, He is a son, or the brother of lucifer, so if you say Jesus to someone in the cult you would be using the same terminology but with very different meanings.

The Israelites speak of Isaiah 53 as speaking of the Nation of Israel, but the Nation of Israel never died.

Salvation is not salvation of works. Social programs cannot accomplish what Christ does in a life. What is the work that we are to do?  John 6:29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”  Our work is to believe Jesus. When we accept Jesus as our Savior it is a free gift, but once we are saved our works will show that salvation.  Show me your faith and I will show you my works.

The Great Commission is Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

We are told to go and make disciples, not social programs.  Teach what Jesus taught. There is no food pantry mentioned in the Scriptures.

Pastor Don spoke about the course of miracles and noted that there were no miracles in it, the course taught many lies such as teaching people that we are all gods (little g).

John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

The Work of God is to believe, and the Work of God is to do the will of God. Everyone who believes has everlasting life.

The final deception (the devil is slick) is to try and deceive the faithful.  If the foundation of faith is destroyed what shall the righteous do? False teachers are increasing.

In the United States 84% say that they are Christian but only 4-5% are actively participating.

An Islamic person is born a Muslim, a Jew is born a Jew but Christians are not born to be born again believers – they must choose to be Born Again.

For a believer born into Christ, there is fruit and a life change.  You have an experience with God, with an open heart and choose to come to Him, standing before the assembly and the congregation.

The 84% that call themselves Christians may not have had this experience with God, and they are “cultural Christians,” with no spiritual connection.

Some who say they are Christians don’t believe all that is in the Bible, but the truth is, God puts HIS WORD above HIMSELF.  Everything God said would happen has happened or will happen.

Today the focus is more on love and peace than on faith and righteousness.  But that is an incomplete picture of God. In these last days people are changing the Gospel to suit their needs. They believe that if you love me you will accept me and my foolish ideas and sin.  That is not the Gospel message, we do love the sinner, but we do not have to love or accept the sin.  Love must be accomplished by faith and righteousness.  Is it real love if we leave the alcoholic and pedophile in their mess.  True love says that I will love you and accept you, but at some point ask you need to ask God to get you right. It is loving to warn people of the outcome of their behavior.

Acts 13 and 15 speaks with what to do with Gentiles. The Judaizers wanted the Gentiles to fully convert to Judaism and circumcision, but after a counsel of elders, came to the following conclusion:  Acts 15:28-29 For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:  that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well.

We love the sinner, but do not condone the sin. The love of God will compel the person to righteousness and win them over. The mercy and righteousness of God will compel you.  Is it real love if God did not love us enough to provide correction if we are on a wrong path?

If a person does not teach the whole of God’s truth and only focuses on the love of God without the correction of God, they are placing themselves above the Word of God.

Everyone who sins will find passages and interpretations of scripture to justify their position, but at the expense of the whole truth of God’s Word. They will stray from holiness and righteousness.  Those who seek to justify their behavior by ignoring parts of scripture will say we are dogmatic, arrogant, and intolerant. We are intolerant, we don’t tolerate sin in our lives.

Some churches are now claiming that God is doing a new thing. God is not going to do something new.  He will fulfill what He said, it is people doing the new thing. He doesn’t have to do anything new.  God does not forget one aspect of His Word, and it doesn’t change because of society changing. These mystical teachings are out of balance because they are placing their personal revelations higher than the Word, and that distorts the Word of God. The Spirit and the Word must agree.

Charity needs to be concerned about the whole man, not just man’s physical needs, but teaching, correction, and the gospel message.

You can’t have an experience with God that doesn’t agree with the Word, for the Spirit and the Word MUST agree. It only takes one false concept to be apostasy.

If the church takes an untenable position that does not agree with the Word, it causes sin to go underground. For example, if celibacy is forced on all the priesthood, it can lead to secret sexual sins. Paul never said that all priests should practice celibacy, but only those given the grace to be called to that.

The world is defining tolerance differently than it used to be defined. Before we tolerated those with different beliefs, but did not have to accept their beliefs as true. Now we are told that we have to accept all beliefs as true, not only agree with them, but promote them.

We are seeing the end results of these beliefs in our schools where the standards are being reduced so that the students can pass the tests. Rather than helping the students grow into the standards, we reduce the standards.

Soon churches are going to have to face a new challenge with the new tolerance laws.  Will pastors preach the WHOLE truth of God’s Word if they stand to lose their tax exempt status for “hate speech?”

1 Peter 2:13-17 Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men— as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God.  Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

We are to submit to the government, unless it conflicts with the Word of God. We need to remember that we are in the world but not of the world. We want to be a good influence for them, not let them influence us with untruth.

People come up to Christians and tell them that we are not to judge them, misquoting the scripture that says judge not lest ye be judged. The truth is that we are to judge, as to agreement with scripture or not, but we do not judge to condemnation. We don’t know who will go to heaven or hell, but we are to judge behavior as being correct or not.

Love without righteousness is anarchy.

Praying your day is blessed

About Heather Marsten

Welcome to Heather's Blog. I'm looking forward to meeting you and checking out your sites. I just moved about nine years of material over from another blog site, Xanga, who may close down mid-July. At first I was disappointed to make the move because I had a lifetime membership at Xanga and had to spend weeks transferring posts. But now I'm thrilled. Already I've met new bloggers and read many new websites. Blogging is a wonderful way to expand my horizons and garner new ideas. I'm a happily married mom of three young adults. My husband and I are proud to watch our children grow and venture out into the world. My daughter is still in college but my two sons have graduated. One has a job and the other just graduated and is in the process of finding a job in his field, physics. Anyone know of any jobs out there? I'm proud of our children and love watching them grow and mature. They've become fine, compassionate, and loving people. Empty nest? Nah, I'm too busy to let an empty nest bother me. Not enough hours in the day. My husband and I enjoy quiet time together and I have many interests to pursue - one of which is blogging :D I am a born-again believer and love God. As you read this blog, you will discover that Bible studies thrill me. There is so much wisdom contained between the covers of the Bible and I am fortunate to sit under the teachings of a remarkable pastor, Pastor Don Moore. Members of our church (Living Word Chapel in West Hurley, New York) are encouraged to teach and there are visiting pastors who stop by our church, I also study the Bible on my own and love sharing what I learn. One other passion is writing. My current work in process is a memoir. A scene from my memoir was published in a book called: Heavenly Company: Entertaining Angels Unaware - an anthology of angelic encounters compiled by Cecil Murphy. I'm hoping my memoir will encourage other survivors of abuse. I grew up in a home filled with abuse, including incest. For most of my life I was searching for something that would fill the void of not being loved by my parents. I tried many ways to find that love -- therapy, relationships, occult studies, and keeping my life so filled I had no way to think about my past. It was only when I discovered God that I was able to put the pieces of my life back together and walk forward in a joyous life. My nickname - wondering has changed from wondering where the heck God was in my life, to wondering what incredible adventure is going to happen next. I hope you enjoy my site. Please say hi, share some thoughts, and ask questions. I look forward to meeting you and checking out your sites. Have a blessed day. Heather
